Back To Reading Memories

My memory: I remember going aboard LB in Phila. directly from Guided Missle school in early 63. I got seasick for the first but not last time going down the DEL river to Norfolk. Coming back from a Med cruise and having bad weather in the North Atlantic and going directly to drydock because of a crack in the superstructure. Going down to fire missiles and stopping at St. Thomas and falling in love with Megans Bay. Last year, took the wife on a cruise a few weeks after 9-11, and after bragging on Megans Bay for 37 years, finally stopped at St. Thomas and she fell in love also! The time in St Thomas I came back from liberty with a half bottle of Old Grand Dad forgotton in my bag. I got a Captain Mast and 3 days restriction on the way back to Norfolk. Never so scared in my life! My Division officer had that bottle in his safe when I got discharged in 66. One regret is that I didn't take the trip to Long Beach,Ca with the ship when she changed home ports in 66. Instead! , I left from Yorktown after discharging our missles and headed home to Pittsburgh. I remember the time our Talos test missile flattened the helicopter on the fantail. Everyone forgot the launcher automatically recycled when it reset. Of course the Gunners Mate on the fantail on the phone neglected to remind the Fa Div. guys about the helo in the way. I don't remember what happened to him. I remember after firing missiles spending the next day scraping burned paint off the launch pad and helping repaint it. I remember becoming a "Golden Dragon" on our around the world cruise "Sea Orbit " on Aug 6th 1964, when we crossed Lat. 0000 and Long. 0000. Who will forget the weather going around the "Cape of Good Hope" on that same trip. Trying to sleep with the ship taking over 30 degree lists. The Enterprise was taking water on her flight deck. The Bainbridge must have caught hell. Try to duplicate visiting our liberty ports on my 1000 days and 200,000 miles on the Long Beach and see what it would cost today. Lots of good memories and bad memories. Palermo,Sicily, like walking thru a grave yard. Sidewalk urinals in Naples Italy. Communal toilet facilities, A hole in the floor, in Istanbul. Running out of fresh milk and eggs soon after leaving port. To this day, not being able to even look at a vienna sausage, without thinging of "Sea Orbit" and not replenishing for over 37 days. Getting screwed on the port starbord watch and having 1 or 3 days liberty in a port. At least when I caught Shore Patrol, I found the "fun" spots. Do you remember!
