Back To Reading Memories

Dates served= 4/77 - 7/12/80

I reported to CGN9 right out of Gunnery School at Great Lakes April of 1977. She was in port at North Island NAS Coronado but over full. I slept on the floor of the MAA seabag locker for a few days and then we moved to barracks on NAS NI and then the Coronado Amphib base where I worked with Marine Security for a few months before we had bunks aboard open up thru transfers off and discharges. Capt Harry Schraeder was CO at the time, CDR Shaw XO. Two good men. I think I started as an E2 GMM striker in TE (Terrier) Div Missile House 2. I was Launcher Capt as a GMM2 when I left in '80. Weps Dept Head was CDR Howell, second whip was LCDR Tassin. Div Ofcrs were Lt's Pitman and Powell. Our Sr Cheif was Cleveland, LPO was Robert Aikins from Michigan. Some of my buddies in TE were: Bryan Graham frm Indiana, Phil "Barney" Revels frm NC, Jeff Lange frm Scottsdale,AZ, Carl "Smitty" Smith frm Indianapolis, John Nicola frm Lee's Summitt,MO, Gary Wood and JD Coffman frm Lubbock,TX. Mardet buds included Mark Lundy frm CA, Jim Belleau, many other Marines that I liked. I went thru the JEST (Jungle Escape and Survival Training)course in the PI with them. Hot and Nasty training but good. I have fond memories of my 78 and 80 West Pacs and all the time in and around them, good and bad. I wish I could find more of the guys but haven't been successful.
