Out on West pack (not sure if it was 86 or 84) we were crusing in the "Bear Box", ship was at condition 3 watches. I was in the forward missile house and it was about 0500. We were broadcasting and acting as if we were the Uss Kitty Hawk so that she can sneak through without being detected. We did the job so well that a Russian submarine was trailing us in our baffles and at a very shallow depth. The Kitty Hawk was coming up aft off us to assume her roll again which meant coming to within 100 yards roughly. When she did this, she smashed into the russian sub creating a huge gash and causing her to surface. I'll never forget that early morning surprise
